No more passwords - hurrah

A number of projects are active at the moment to free us from the dreaded password. Only the most geeky of us have a genuinely unique password for every service we use, and even then if someone gets into our email I’m sure most services will be at risk. I often sign up for a dozen new services in a single day - you can be sure I repeat passwords more than I should. I wish I only needed one password…
This plugin, from Dan Coulter, allows users to register for, and logon with, an OpenID. OpenID enable your self hosted blog in a single plugin. It works very well, I’ve tested it on a couple of blogs which will launch soon (I’ll add the links when they do). Some issues around the alignment and fit of the additional information around the logon / register areas will likely need some theme tweaks for most people - but I’m sure later versions will add a little flexibility here.
The plugin can be downloaded here, along with its Flickr sibling and soon to be joined by more on a similar theme. I like the idea of OpenID, butfor certain types of blogs using a Flickr logon will be more available amongst the userbase.
Other OpenID plugins are available; find the latest at wordpress.org, or here. All are at relatively early versions. Wordpress.com is also OpenID enabled, allowing you to use your x.wordpress.com blog address as your openID. This alone should spur a lot more OpenID activity.
