Pimp my blog theme

The simplest way to differentiate your blog is to select a theme which fits your topic. And there’s no shortage of themes out there. There are new themes and updated themes springing up every day, which get excellent coverage both at Wordpress.com and at the excellent weblogtoolscollection. Finding something close to what you’re looking for shouldn’t be too stressful.

When grabbing a new theme it can be disconcerting to read that it has already been downloaded 35000 times. That’s 35000 blogs which could look identical to yours if you don’t customise in some way. Theme customisation is critical if you want to look like you care about your blogs attire.

For some themes such as MistyLook and Cutline this customisation can be as simple as changing the main header image on the theme. Depending on the theme this is often possible through the Options tab, but can always be done via FTP if you have access. The results can be quick and quite dramatic:

Creative Commons Goodness

I love creative commons. The search function at creativecommons.org is amazingly useful for turning up photography at Flickr to use in preparing new headers for your theme. Some people publish new headers (some great cutline headers, or mistylook headers) they create in this way for others to use, so the hard part is done for you.

Pimp my Blog?

I’ve looked and can’t find anywhere doing this well so I’m starting a directory of CC theme additions which I’m titling ‘Pimp my Blog‘ until someone at MTV sends me an email at which point it’ll probably be renamed “theme candy” unless someone can suggest a better name.

If you publish or you come across any collections of replacement headers, icons, CSS etc… which is covered by a CC licence I’d love to add links to Pimp my Blog. Just email me or add a comment below. Given the title of this blog and my own interest this will be WordPress focussed, and I would guess weighted towards customisation of the most popular themes.

I’m also completely open to adding contributors to make additions to this section of the blog, so if you’re interested drop me an email.
