Just a quick plug for this plugin, I’m playing with it right now for another project, which is why I’ve been quiet this last couple of weeks, and it’s proving really useful. All will be revealed shortly. This is a flexible plugin, which solved a few key problems for the project. Give it a try, even just for birthday reminders for your readers!

themes : pimpin’ a fan / sucks site

One of the things I love about the internet is the fact that I can create something within a few hours to support or hate a product, company or ANYTHING I consume. For example if I thought Estee Lauder made me super pretty (gosh, I’ve gone all sappy since this post) I could knock up a quick WP blog with a custom theme to evangelise for them.

What would I need to complete my custom theme? A good font! But which font?

This post gives a huge list of 100 companies with associated fonts. A slight German bias, but great fun none the less. For more of a web2.0 feel try this HUGE illustrated list of web2.0 logos with associated fonts. Just knock up a fake logo with the new font and apply to a great customisable theme like this one.

Just beware those cease and desist letters!

Found at kottke and google.

technorati video search

Following a few posts last month about video in WordPress I’ve been pretty impressed with the quality of the new video search at technorati. Technorati has undergone some pretty sizeable (and seemingly ongoing) changes over the past few weeks. A few have been amazingly overdue (flipping importance of authority and rank), a few seem pretty pointless (the ticker at the masthead).

2.jpgThe most useful videos are those that quickly show you how to do things, rather than those educating you about some idiots opinions. Try “wordpress plugin install” or “wordpress setup” for example.  Hopefully the Technorati alts continue - I’ve become a daily user again.

plugins: speedy mp3

I hate the internet sometimes. Mainly it’s when I’ve had to view more than 2 or three sites which stream mp3s at me without my asking for them - myspace and other social networking profiles are the worst offenders. The 1bit MP3 player plugin provides a way to subject your wordpress blog visitors to similar (though hopefully more sophisticated) treatment. That undersells this plugin, you have to click the link to hear the music - if only that rule applied everywhere.

This link to an MP3 from this site linked yesterday at boingboing should give you the idea. Simply create a standard link to the mp3 file (full path required) and the plugin does the rest. Very simple. An excellent piece of work.

The excellent weblogtoolscollection blog has an interesting plugin competition kicking off right around now, head over there for a look around. The prize list seems to be growing, and the competition blog should start looking interesting as things get moving.

quicklink: picassa photo embedding plugin

logo.gif Flickr still rules my roost, but a few people I know swear by Picassa for image management now that they do online albums as easily as PC based ones. This plugin lets you pull in some pics to your blog. Simple, but useful if you resist the Flickr lure.

BTW - if anyone uses both Flickr and Picassa regularly do you have any thoughts on speed / availability of the services. Flickr seems to struggle for me a little more than it used to, which can be hyper frustrating. A jump would be quite a big deal, but if its much faster possibly worth it.

tumblelog wordpress themes? Nice idea? Probably!

Simple themes can make simple content shine. Be it ‘I’ve gone to the store’ simple, or ‘10 line product review’ simple. Ultimate simplicity can be found in a tumblelog format - TumbleJack provides some pretty clever mootools operated jaziness.

“Because sometimes you need more control over your tumblelog! Most themes for WordPress are “full-featured”, and have no love for tumblelog enthusiasts. Now, however, you have the simplicity of a tumblelog along up with the power of WordPress- a match made in heaven!”

I’m going to have a look at creating a Tumblejack version of this site as a test over the weekend, aiming for a hybrid twitter / wpguy / tumblr feel. Should be fun!

plugins: better comments manager

This is a relatively simple plugin, which through the addition of two little words to your comment moderation page could save you hours a week. Especially if, like me for the past couple of weeks, you are struggling to commit enough time to your site and find comment moderation takes disproportionate amounts of your time.

Which two words? ‘Reply’ and ‘View all’. I know I know, thats three words.  But it’s two functions, and thats whats important. Reply lets you reply directly from the moderate page, which is very neat. View all shows all comments on the post - very useful to catch repetitive comments or ensure you get the full context of ‘replies to replies’.

I’ll be trying it out over the next couple of weeks. Check the detailed site here for more information, and the download.

Nice article about old WordPress Tshirts here. I’m forever being told to throw out of shirts by by other half, she just doesn’t understand the value of a genuine urban jungle tour ‘lips’ Rolling Stones tshirt.
Found [here] while searching for Wii shirts.

google analytics gets facelift

newanalytics.pngA morning surprise is always welcome, this screenshot shows the new face of Google Analytics. I know one of my accounts isn’t updated yet, so if you are one of the unlucky users not to get an immediate update - look what you’re missing. The Google take on it is over here.

Much more interactive, and instantly makes the old version look weak. More on this in the monthly update in a couple of weeks time.
